Nokia Announces Free Navigation for all….still manages to cock up

Nokia pulled a strange one today, it announced a new version of Ovi maps and that all the Ovi premium services were to become completely free for life, that means free turn by turn directions, free traffic updates and free city explorer feature……..brilliant….er, not quite!

Initially this is only available on a select few devices, not a problem I thought, I have an N97, it’s the flagship Nokia device so of course it will be part of these initial devices……WRONG!!! All the S60V5 devices, including the N97 mini might I add, plus a few E Series devices are supported, no N97 original though.

Supposedly support for the N97 is coming next week but I can’t help thinking Nokia should have delayed the announcement until N97 support was ready, after all the N97 users deserve that much.

I received my N97 with the version 10 firmware and it has been a painful buggy journey to where we are now (V20). For N97 support not to be included from the outset feels like a kick in the balls.

You can actually install the N97 Mini Ovi client on the N97 if you download it from the website using a PC browser but it does eat a large chunk of the already limited space on the C drive of the N97.

It’s like Nokia doesn’t think things through sometimes…..don’t get me wrong though, Ovi Maps being completely free is a brilliant move and can only be a good thing (unless you make Sat Navs)
